Here are some pics I took with my iPhone.  I should have used a gallery to display all the pics but my pc is acting up and I had to do this post from my iPhone.

This is where you get to create your own mini-fig person.  Not much of a selection of pieces.  Looked like it had been picked through pretty good.  I told Ethan we’ll come back after Christmas when it is a little less crazy.

It had been locking up during games for the past few weeks, but I figured it was because I hadn’t cleaned the side vents for a while.  I told Ethan to not use it and unplugged it from the power supply just to make sure.  When I went to blow out the dust I found there was very little at all collected.  I went ahead and got everything cleaned up and plugged back in yesterday morning and fired it up.  It made it through about 2 seconds of the start up screen when it belted out a crackly digital sounding screech, pixelated the screen, and then froze.  My mouthdropped open and I had that flip flop feeling in my stomach.  The only good so far was the ring of death had not shown up.

I got on the intertubes and tried the trouble shooting steps and it always kept freezing during the start up.  And finally after about the 10th reboot the Ring-o-Death showed up.  At least since the Ring-o-Death was here I will get my Xbox fixed or replaced for free.  Now I just have to deal with no Xbox for the next 14-21 days as per the Xbox repair FAQ states as the average turn around time:(

I guess I will have to get to know Ethan’s WII a little better.

I would have loved to have a stair case like this when I was a kid.  It was always hurt so much to slide down the carpeted stairs, but it was possible.  Actually, I would like to have the slide now days.  I would shave off a good 10 seconds each day when getting ready for work!

Since I live in an apartment I wasn’t able to just hose the dog down outside.  I cleaned him up the best I could with vinegar then brought him into the bathtub.  Once in there we washed him down with tomato soup (no juice in the house) at first.  That didn’t work so we tried baking soda and dish soap.  That helped a little.

Benington spent the night outside and was only able to come inside after we bought some de-skunk spray from the pet store.  Unfortunately the bathroom is still unusable even after using the de-skunk spray and bleach, but is getting less stinky after each day.

Here are some pics Becca took.  I think the tomato bath was more traumatic for Benington than the skunk stink.

We got to the game a little late, but it didn’t matter since the game was delayed due to a storm in the area and lots of lightening.  The game was supposed to start at 7:05 but after the rain delay the game started at 9:30.  The storm brought in some hail too.  About dime size at the max.  Here is a picture of the storm after it passed over the stadium from the top deck.

The new Star Trek movie was pretty good. Lots of action and they paid pretty good attention to detail on the special effects.  My favorite was seeing the phaser modules on multi-axis gimbals moving around as they fired.  Before you just saw the phaser come out of a spot on the ship with no detail.  With out giving away to much, this movie looks like it will open door on many new Trek movies that can divert from the “classic” Trek universe.

Despite all that Ethan had a blast flying the kite.  Only after a few minutes he had figured out that if he moved the string around the kite would dive around and do tricks.  Before I knew it I was diving out of the way of the kite all the while Ethan is laughing his head off.

The last picture is of the flowers Ethan picked out for his mommy today.  Nice and springy.  The smell is already making my sinuses go crazy.

The double blinded test or study is one of the best tools in researching a mystery.  It reduces the errors or bias that can influence the outcome of the study.  After reading up on the scientific method and blinded studies I could for once see that the truth could be found on the previously listed paranormal phenomena.  Unlike the dowsers shown in the video below, I was able to admit I was wrong on my of certain things and embrace the truth that was proven with real science.

Last night when I went to Whataburger for lunch (around 2:00 am) I couldn’t go through the drive thru because someone passed out in their car.  While inside getting my food the police, fire, and ambulance showed up.  By the time I went back out to my vehicle the police woke the guy up and arrested him for intox I guess.  Here is a picture from my iPhone.  Click it to embiggen.

Now that I have a phone with a decent camera I am going to try to get more pictures of the crazy stuff I see while driving around late at night.

I do very strongly believe in freedom of religious beliefs (or non beliefs).  But I also believe that the safety and well being of my family should not be infringed upon by someone else’s beliefs.  I just think that hiding behind religion is when it comes to kids safety is just to easy.  I admit I have no idea how to make this situation better by not allowing un-vaccinated children in public schools or not.  I guess I will just have to chaulk it up on the list of fears you have when raising a kid.

Just take a look around in the site and read some of the absurd “facts” given to prove that everything revolves around the Earth.  Here is one quote that I picked out stating facts that have to be “assumed” and that are not proven in order for the Earth to rotate.

5) The Earth’s atmosphere must be assumed to be just an airy, fixed extension of the alleged rotating Earth. It is assumed and must be assumed that this atmosphere must have the remarkable ability to synchronize speeds of objects in it at all altitudes–birds, clouds, jets, low orbit satellites, alleged geo-synchronous satellites over 22,000 miles out–and to be unaffected by alleged Earth movements of speeds ranging from 1000 MPH to 67,000 MPH to 500,000 MPH to 660,000,000 MPH. This assumption is mandatory once the rotating Earth assumption is made and can not be ignored in the helio model of the eclipse phenomena.

This statement just tweaked me a little when I read it.  I am not the smartest guy around, but even I know some easy to point out flaws in this statement.  They say this has to be true in order for the earth to be rotating in the heliocentric model.  But this statement is not true even for a rotating earth.  Geo-synchronous satellites could care less if the earth was rotating or not.  They are put into orbit above the equator at a certain altitude so that they orbit the earth at the same speed the earth spins.  If the earth were to spin faster then they would be at higher orbits or if the earth spin slower they would be at lower orbits.  If the earth were not to spin at all then there would not be such a thing as geo-synchronous orbits.  Also, the atmosphere is not synchronized with the rotation of the earth, hence the reason we have hurricanes and typhoons and trade winds in general.

I could go on and on all day debunking this site with just commonly observable facts.  Just my quick 10 minute browse of this site makes me wonder (but grateful)  how we were able to get out of the dark ages of burning witches at the stake and talking to burning bushes.  Oh ya, science is the reason why.  Fact based, falsifiable science.

On the early note, if you do live in Texas make sure you keep up with the Texas Freedom Network blog and see how you can help stave off the anti-science antics of the Texas lawmakers.  This much more of a threat to our future generations.

I know there are all kinds of homeopathic remedies out there, but I never thought I would ever see them at Walgreen’s.  I always figured you had to go to the local health food store to find them.  I can’t believe Walgreen’s or any other large chain drug store would knowingly sell worthless medicine.

Later that night I went to Kroger’s and found this.

After thinking about it for a while I think I figured out why these are being sold in normal stores.  These are the only products that fill the “medicated” ear and eye drops niche in the drug stores.  From what I have seen, the only medication that you can use in your ears and in your eyes is almost always prescribed by the doctor.  The prescribed types of medication are like antibiotics and not like pain killers where there is an over the counter type and a prescribed type.  Some companies (Similasan pictured above and below) develop these truly worthless products that can be safely sold as remedies.   Since they are worthless medicinal wise and mainly just water, the claims on the boxes of “safe for all ages and with any OTC and prescribed antibiotic.” actually are true.

Now this is just my opinion and I sill have to talk to a doctor to confirm this.  Don’t take what I say as fact.  Look it up yourself as well.  Go to these links to get started: wikipedia.org, Australian Skeptics, or just google homeopathy.

As a side note, the night that I found out that Kroger’s was selling these homeopathic medicines remedies,  my co worker was with me and I mentioned to him my disgust for homeopathic medicines remedies being sold here.  He said he had no idea what the difference between homeopathic and normal medicine was.  I showed him a few things on the Internet and now he is dead set against homeopathy as well.  I am glad I was able to bring a candle to his dark uninformed view of the world.

Wal*mart can get pretty screwed up on their pricing sometimes. Take a look at above.  This is a pic that a reader at the consumerist took when he went to Wal*mart one day.  The only thing I can figure is that they had some milk that was about to expire.  But I think that is giving Wal*mart a little to much credit.

Here is a picture I took a month or so ago when shopping for some trash bags.  Click the pic for a little better resolution.    All the Great value trash bags were the same price of $6.63.  Did not matter what size or kind.  I took a few different boxes to the price checker just to make sure.  Craziness.

I now hate going to Wal*mart because I spend half the time there with a calculator trying to figure if the bigger size of things is more expensive.  Which it is most of the time.  They work the “bigger size, better value” brainwash on a lot of their items.  I’ll post back with some pictures next time I go.

Thanks to a Christmas gift from my mom, I was able to go and and get the book within the first week or two from when it was released.  I haven’t had a chance to read it yet, but I have been listening to the podcast version.  Even if I never get the chance to read it and only listen to the podcast I am glad I was able to support this great author and his new, better approach to writing and selling his works.

Since my last post about the “Contagious” release I have listened to his other books “Nocturnal” and “Earthcore.”  I am currently downloading “Ancestor”, “Bloodcast”, and “The Rookie.”  I have no idea what they are about, but I can’t wait to get time to listen to them.

Holy crap!! While looking for the names of the other books I am downloading I just found out the Scott will be here in Dallas tomorrow!  I hope I will be able to get up in time to make it to the book reading.  The event link is here.  This odd work week and night shift really sucks sometimes.  I am going to have to suck it up and just plan on taking a nap at work tomorrow night.

There is an “unprecedented increase” in measles cases in England and Wales, experts report.

And 75% of the 115 cases diagnosed in November were outside the traditional hot spot of London – in the north west, west midlands and south east.

The HPA’s Dr Mary Ramsay said the rise was due to “relatively low” MMR uptake.

The number of measles cases in November 2008 was the same as was seen in the whole of 1996.

“This means that measles, which is highly infectious, is spreading easily among these un-vaccinated children.”

She added: “The HPA is concerned that we may see measles epidemics take hold.”

Unfortunately, these disease outbreaks affect children the most.  They depend on their parents to take care of their needs and to be vaccinated.  Unlike adults, they don’t have a choice in the matter.  The chart below shows the aftermath.

I have also almost filled up the hard drive on the Xbox 360 with add-ons and other stuff.  Looks like I am going to have to save up for the 120 gig hard drive.

The Netflix on the Xbox is great as well.  The quality is better than the crappy encoding on most of my digital cable channels.  It is so nice to just be able to start up Netflix with out having to hook up the laptop to the TV and hope the cats don’t jump on it and knock it over.

I saw today that my company’s stock went up along with the DOW.  That reminded me of the one time I tried investing some money in stocks many years ago and lost it all.  I was a victim of the telecom bubble burst.  I had invested in Williams Communications Group around 2000-2001.  About a year after my investment, had I been paying better attention to it, I could have doubled my investment had I sold at the right time.

A few months after my stock was worthless I was asked to join a class action suit against them for securities fraud.  I went ahead and signed up for it not expecting anything out of it more than a check for a few bucks.

Fast forward to today, I did a search to see if the case was still pending.  I found that the case was settled back in 2007 in the favor of Williams Communications for the subclass of the common stock.  Court Docs link.

There goes my check for half a gallon of gas.

Please go read the post linked above.  Things like this embarrass me.  I didn’t think that Texas was this backward of a state.  I moved here from Oklahoma and thought it was a move up.  Over the past year I have not heard of any issues such as these in Oklahoma.

I know most people in the US think of Texas as being one of the “fly-over states”, but the diversity of people I have met, both rural and urban, have me convinced otherwise.  I am surprised that it would go this far.  I know this is a Red state, but wow.

Here is a link to the USGS showing a list of the recent quakes in the DFW area.  USGS earthquake list.  Below is a Google Earth view of the quakes supplied by the USGS.  The orange and yellow dots are the quakes.  Orange means past day and yellow mean past week.  Click the picture for a better resolution.

There has been a lot of new gas drilling activity around the DFW airport in the past years.  One news story from WFAA said that the USGS is looking into whether it might have something to do with the ground shifting.

The actual title reads “Parents charged after baby trapped by dogfight.”  The very first sentence is “A couple was charged Monday with child endangerment after their unattended baby was found trapped by a bloody dogfight at their Friendswood home.”  The first thing I thought was that the parents should be punished severely and thank goodness the child was rescued.  But when I got half way through the story I find out that there were two older siblings in the house with the baby, 13 and 11 years old.

Now this is different.  Now it does not sound so bad.  The baby was not left alone or unattended. 

The world around us is bad enough that the media doesn’t need to hype every news story.

I was listening to Skeptoid, one of my new favoritest podcasts, and he had an episode about microwave ovens. He cited some misleading facts stated on various sites on the net saying that microwave ovens cause cancer and such and how they are wrong. So taking the advise given by the author of Skeptoid, I decided to look into this myself. I did a search in Google for “microwave hazard” and found a link to “The Hidden Hazards of Microwave Cooking.” This page had the same hazards described in the Skeptoid episode. One of the sections of the page stood out to me and was not covered in the Skeptoid episode, “Microwaved blood kills patient.”

In 1991, there was a lawsuit in Oklahoma concerning the hospital use of a microwave oven to warm blood needed in a transfusion. The case involved a hip surgery patient, Norma Levitt, who died from a simple blood transfusion.

It seems the nurse had warmed the blood in a microwave oven. This tragedy makes it very apparent that there’s much more to “heating” with microwaves than we’ve been led to believe. Blood for transfusions is routinely warmed, but not in microwave ovens. In the case of Mrs. Levitt, the microwaving altered the blood and it killed her.

It’s very obvious that this form of microwave radiation “heating” does something to the substances it heats. It’s also becoming quite apparent that people who process food in a microwave oven are also ingesting these “unknowns”.

In the instance above, the microwave oven that warmed the blood did not kill the patient, the nurse did. The outcome would have been the same if the blood was cooked in a similar manner such as being put in a pot of boiling water.

With the way microwave ovens work, there is no true low setting or high setting. They work in the same manner that most conventional ovens work, being gas or electric. The burner in the oven will stay on until the desired temperature is reached and then shut off. When the temperature drops below a specified threshold the burner will turn back on until the desired temperature is reached again and will continue the process over and over again. Same goes for your home heat and air conditioner. This same principle works in microwave ovens. It’s just that the microwaves are much more efficient in heating the water molecules. Thus the stuff being heated is actually being cooked almost instantly. If your microwave oven does have settings for various power levels, you will notice by the sound it makes that the microwaves are being turned on and off in the same manner as described above.

But since it is hard to get an equal distribution of waves through the entire substance being cooked, it is often cooked unevenly. From my anecdotal observations it is usually hot on the outside and cold on the inside. So when the nurse heated the blood in the microwave she essentially cooked some of the blood cells and did not affect the others. Since some were heated and other still cold the net effect, once mixed, would be warm blood. The same would happen if the blood pouch was placed in pot of boiling water. According to the American Association of Blood Banks Standards of 2000 hemolysis (bursting of red blood cells) will occur if blood is heated above 42 degrees Celsius (107.6 degrees Fahrenheit.) So the blood that was transfused back into the patient was damaged. It was not the radiation of the microwaves that turned the blood into radioactive goo or changing the electrical forces of the blood or whatever else the anti microwave oven people are saying. It was human error that caused the death. Which unfortunately is the same reason most deaths happen in and outside hospitals.

I think i would be calling the manufacturer of the bike helmet that is upper left of center. I would hope if I was in an accident with it on it wouldn’t be thrown clear of danger and leave my head to take a beating.

I used to subscribe to a podcast called Mysterious Universe. I was like Coast to Coast AM but much better content. I found out today through Paypal that my subscription has been canceled. So I went to www.mysteriousuniverse.org to see what was going on and get this page (link above.) So I do a search on google to see if anyone else has been complaining and notice the wikipedia entry. It basically says the site is down again for no reason.

That’s pretty crappy when you have to find out that something you are paying for is no longer there through paypal and wikipedia. That’s like going to work one day and seeing a note on the door that the company is out of business and to back home and get a lawyer.

I sent an email requesting a refund for my current subscription and for a few months of my last subscription. We’ll see what happens.
